we were sick and tired of waking up in the mornings frightened to peel back the covers, so we bought a small boat from an old fisherman with a thick checked shirt, and set sail...
the sea was rough, and at first it made us feel queasy. the days and nights seemed endless and without end. we sailed for 57 days without any sight of land, but on the 58th we found ourselves tying up our little boat in a harbour.
the people were very friendly, helped us to find somewhere to live, and even helped to fix the walls and the roof. they told us that in the winter we would be needing strong walls and a good roof. we painted our house a nice sky blue colour and called it home.
our days are spent designing and building websites for people who need them. in the summer evenings we go out and walk until early morning as the sun hardly sets, and in the winter we put on our big boots and trudge through the snow to our local bar and have some warming drinks and talk about how happy we are.
sometimes I like to go to the kaffibarinn on my own and remember how it used to be and know how lucky I am to be here. on the way home walking down skólavördustígur I think of what my friend once told me, "at this moment there are 12,674,523 snowflakes falling..."
the freshly-fallen snow creaks under my feet.
